Brothers of the Christian Schools
The Brothers of the Christian Schools is a religious congregation of men within the Catholic Church who was founded in 1679 by a French priest and scholar, Saint John Baptist De La Salle. De La Salle was moved by “the situation of abandonment of the children of the artisans and the poor” during his time. Moved by their desperate situation, he became involved in setting up schools in order to provide poor boys with a sound education. Today, about 3,500 Brothers and about 84,000 Lasallian colleagues are continuing with the Lasallian educational tradition running 65 universities and colleges, more than 1,000 schools, all together servicing over 1,000,000 students throughout 79 countries.
